Lifeguard

By James Patterson

The perfect job, the perfect girl, the perfect home...

Thrilling, escapist, shallow, yet engrosing fantasty. Perfect holiday pulp fiction, which is where I read it. This is a fun yet scary adventure in the same vein as Columbo or Rohl Dahl's Anglia TV Tales of the unexpected.

Growing the famous TV series' genre, Patterson takes us on a roller-coaster thrill-ride through Miami's billionaire owning- and working-class, honest and criminal, who support them. Our mostly-innocent hero has to go on the run, dodging hit men and frame-ups as he puts the pieces together of what really went wrong that fateful night when his perfect life fell violently apart.

The romantic plot twists give the book an extra kick; our hero's deficiencies and wile give him and most of the other chacters good depth for such a comic-book-style presentation.

I look forward with relish to the inevitable movie adaptation.
