The Long Goodbye (1973)

This is a very stylish and sexy thriller. The title will probably ring a bell from a number of 100-best compilatiions because it's a real classic. Goodbye is highly evocative of a kind of laid-back west-coast 60s/70s fantasy-world that makes you nostalgic even if you weren't there. Elliott Gould plays Philip Marlowe, a chain-smoking private investigator who lives with his cat in an apartment overlooking most of San Francisco and a bevvy of hot hippy chicks.

Doing a favour for an old friend, then what seems like a "routine" missing husband case, he gets drawn into a complex web of murder, missing money, betrayal, violence and gangsters.

The couple who lose each other consist of a well-played but unspectacular Elileen Wade and her eccentric and alcoholic husband Roger.

Adapted from a novel by Raymond Chandler, the movie is big on atmosphere and gritty characters. It's well-paced, with a good few light moments to balance the many dark ones. The locations vary between interesting and spectacular, especially the Wade's beachside house.

The plot twists, turns and lurches, with few dull predictable or moments right to the end. So, what's not to like?
