HERE IN BERKELEY we have very nice Rdh-Ka Deities. Our head pjr (he is no longer head pjr) wanted to paint Them for Janmam. Since he had little experience of Deity worship, he didnt know how to remove the old paint. So without asking the older devotees, he started to scrape off the old paint with a razor blade. His reason was that he didnt want to use harsh chemicals.
The result was many scratches on the face of Lord Gokulnanda and rmati Rdhrn! Since many of us didnt have experience either, we also didnt know the proper way to take off old paint.
One senior devotee, Hdaya Govinda Prabhu, advised us to use eucalyptus oil. So we tried it, and it was really successful. The important thing is that one has to first soak the paint with oil. Let it remain for 15-30 minutes, then polish with oil, tilaka and lemon juice. So eucalyptus oil is a very good replacement for harsh chemicals. PLEASE TRY IT OUT!
